I know I’m capable of finishing this bottle of wine
And watching the candle burn down to a nub
And fizzle out.
Fire has always fascinated me
I could bathe in it
I’d be happily consumed.
Red wine, cold outside
candle light, a warm, sleeping dog

Like a mongrel, kicked to the curb
that’s how broken I feel.
Tomorrow there be hope.
Though I’ll never be purebred,
maybe the curb will be softer

is this the day i’ll just give up
go out without a coat in the cold
take all the hope i gathered and put it away
in a box under the basement stairs
hopes gather dust, you know
just like furniture and boxed-up Christmas trees
from when the kids were small and the tempers short
and all the love that gathered was precious and unappreciated
tell me, where has it all gone
packed away with the coats for the summer
but now it’s cold and the winter clothes hide under the stairs
gathering hope and dust

i’m picking up the bones
scattered all around
the meat that was this year
consumed in listless crumbs
breads long forgotten
and riches, oh the riches
that would be mine
had not the year wasted them away…
ah but who is to blame
is it the clock?
or myself…
the carcass is long gone
the skeletons stacked
and stored back in their closet
the sheep of the new year
the sacrificial lamb
fresh and clean-smelling
wool over eyes
shall likely be as brittle
as wasted and tired
in three-score and sixty-five days hence.
at the bottom of a bottle
knee-deep in long green grass in summer
beneath a blanket of stars
amidst a warm breeze
with you between my legs
close to ecstasy
over the moon
retreat to candlelight
enveloped in soft music
gliding upon your breath
on a cloud of happiness
you’re full-on
or not at all
retreat! retreat!
is your frightened motto
screamed in a whimper
of stage-one inversion
a
star
atop a
tree
is
lit
in hope
for the new
year’s growth
and prosperity
with health for all,
for there is nothing on
earth, that one who is true
can wish for more than the joy
and love and peace that is brought
by caring for one’s fellow man, no matter
where
he was
