#SoCS – Your Mistake

Your first mistake was thinking I’d care if you committed a small felony. Shoplifting is nothing – I know you did it for the kids.

Your second mistake was having a party to which I wasn’t invited. Yeah, it was for your kids, and your wife was there. But I wanted to come anyway. You told me you cared about me.

Your final mistake was telling me you cared about me… in the end. I made sure the cops found out who stole all those electronics. Now the kids don’t have a daddy. And your wife…

Your first mistake was thinking I’d care to keep your secret.

Mistake is the word of the day on The Daily Post.

Romance – The Learning Curve (Fiction)

In romance, there is a learning curve we all must traverse.

First kiss may seem like the ultimate in excitement, until it happens and we find ourselves liplocked with a drooling boy, with something hard shoved down his pants.

That first alien experience when we girls discover what that hard thing feels like directly. It drools also, much to our amazement.

The first time we let him fumble around – who knew bra straps were such a mystery?

And then, when we finally let him go all the way. For me that was to be with the altar behind us. Our wedding day was exhausting, with an evening spent socializing with everyone but him. I was nervous, naturally. Mostly because, despite the fact that all my romantic experiences up ’til then had not been what I expected, I had dreamed this moment would be perfection. Just like all the romance novels I’d read, where the heroine is worshiped by her man. Things always go so smoothly, don’t they?

I suppose my first mistake was thinking that a limo was a good idea, so he would be free to drink and not have to drive back to our hotel. Suffice to say my learning curve is complete: bra straps are even more a mystery, floors are hard, and drooling and snoring also go together.

This virgin bride will try not to step on him when I get up in the morning.

Moon – 50 words

The crescent moon draws me in. Without you, I have reverted back to what I was at birth: a creature of the night. I live only in my dreams of you. By day, I waste away, a shadow of the man that existed when you, my love, made me shine.

Captive

Locked in a basement for months, with a dirty one-by-three-foot window her only evidence that the outside world still existed, she sometimes wished she was dead. Not because she had lost hope, but rather if she was a ghost, she could walk through the closed door to freedom.

She wanted nothing more than to return to a life with a man who didn’t know she was alive. To die in such a hell hole alone was unthinkable. Somehow, through her dreams and his, she would let him know she was alive.

Complicated

She knew in her heart he had another girl, but she had to to confirm it. She tried to sneak a peek at his phone, but she couldn’t get close enough. His friends would tell her nothing. Guys stick together.

So she had no choice but to go through all the profile pics of his connections on Facebook, to see if his face was there. When she hit the 2,347th “friend,” she decided to simply change her own relationship status to “It’s complicated” and ask him directly.

The one-word prompt on The Daily Post is “Complicated.”

Reach – #SoCS and The Daily Post

The cash is sitting on the table. I watch on the closed-circuit camera set-up to see if she’ll reach for it. I trust her – we’ve been together for five years. I hope she won’t do it.

Trust is essential in a relationship. It’s the one thing that will make me cut out, lack of trustworthiness.

I’m just about to get up and go back into the room when she does it. It takes her under two seconds to grab and pocket the cash.

I go to confront her: “Why did you do it?” I ask.

“Why were you watching me?” she counters.

She’s got a point.

Reach is the one-word prompt from The Daily Post.

Surface Love

Your love for me is surface love. At parties you use me like a bauble, one to be pointed at and admired. In a restaurant you serve your knowledge of wine across the table and off me it bounces, volleying your admiration for yourself back at you.

But between the sheets you clothe me with confidence. You undress me with wanton passion. You gather me up and accompany me to your glory.

And in the morning… you skate away.

my muse

muse, you travel through me
like a song
in a dream
on the tip of my tongue
your kiss
is a whisper of magic
possibilities eternal
your touch
a gentle push to create
and through your eyes
we see worlds
until now unfathomable
your thoughts flow through me
at times unwanted,
they invade my mind.
and yet,
i can’t live without you.

wet me with your tears
shake me with laughter
shock me with your
delicious ways
and i will follow you
as though i have no choice
for the truth is
you command my every word.

Disconnect

If I can’t have you, I can at least dream you are here.
The day you died I thought I would expire with grief.
These four walls seem to mock me – outside is inches away, but here I stay.
Holding your lifeless body, trapped somehow in those moments when your eyes gazed back…
If I ever escape, I will find you and hold you and never let you go.
…there I remain. Except when I sleep, I dream you are here, my love.
My love. Until we meet again.

soulmate

as sure as the stars
glitter in the night
i know you’re out there
searching for me
as i search for you
on every street
in every crowd
the one i’ll know
just know
is meant for me
for in the dark
each night i lay
and hear your voice
whispering love
elusive as
an echo

Elusive.
